Lukla Flights - Recent Events

Thankyou for taking the time to read into the issue of the Lukla flight, an issue that understandably has concerns for travellers and parents.

With utmost respect and sympathy for those concerned with the crash on 28 September 2012 I have the following update.

It has been initially confirmed as a bird strike which if proven to be the sole reason does not affect any procedural/mechanical failures in terms of the overall safety of an airline. Statistically Sita Air would remain the safest option to fly with Dornier 228 aircraft from Kathmandu to Lukla.

The issue of "safest" isn't the operator airline per se but a combination of operator airline, the particular aircraft they use, their volume of flights and their operating bases. So when you look at how an airline operates a certain aircraft between Kathmandu to Lukla the picture differs from a well meaning media report or internet search of an airline. For example a younger airline with less flights operating in Lukla with an aircraft which has less units worldwide or Asia wide than another aircraft may well seem the safer option, when it is not.

We will make the absolute decision on operator airline and aircraft nearer the time, you have my assurance that this will be the best possible decision for all the children as an expedition and not in anyway based on cost or other business factors. At this time feel the lowest risk still lies with a Dornier 228 flight operated by Sita Air.

I operate a business which relies solely on reputation for our risk management and operations in outdoor education and wish to assure you of this priority. That said, as a parent myself, I totally appreciate your concerns and enquiries and welcome further correspondence at any time.

If you would to request a more detailed email showing the facts as we know them about the Lukla airline operators, please send us an email requesting this.

Thankyou.
